Welcome to the Green: A Beginner’s Guide to the Game

For someone who’s never stepped foot on the green before, the golf course can be a very daunting place. That’s where we step in. Our mission here at Lilihammer is to welcome a new generation of women onto the course, and ensure that they feel confident in both their clothes and abilities. Here are some tips and tricks for newcomers to getting out on the green:

  1. Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously:

It’s easy to be hard on yourself in the beginning — but you’re not just out on the green to learn, you’re there to have fun, too. Golf is a game, not a test– so keep your head up, and don’t be afraid to crack a smile or two.

  1. Consistency Is the Goal:

Learning the game is all about showing up. Establish a routine that you can stick to, and take pride in your commitment to the sport. Being a golfer is about loving the game, not perfecting it. And remember, the more you play, the more you learn.

  1. Everyone Starts Somewhere:

You’re not going to be great right away— and that’s okay! No one plays like a pro the first time they pick up a club. Take it easy, and give yourself permission to be a beginner.

  1. Learn From Every Shot

Just hit your ball into the water? We’ve all been there. Remember, the best teacher in golf is yourself. If a shot doesn’t go your way, don’t sweat it— think about what caused the mistake, and make an adjustment on your next swing.

  1. The Driving Range Is Your Best Friend:

Feeling good about your swing on the course starts off the course. Whether you want to hone in on one or two clubs, or get a feel for your whole bag, the driving range is the place to be. And don’t forget to practice your putting. The furthest shots are not always the most important. Sometimes a three-putt does more damage than a mishit from the fairway.

  1. Feel the Part:

Feeling confident on the course starts with what you’re wearing. Not all courses are the same when it comes to dress code, with many private clubs requiring collared shirts and skirts of an appropriate length. No matter where you play, find clothes that don't make you choose between style, comfort, and class.

  1. Enjoy the Journey:

You’ve got a long and exciting journey ahead of you—so sit back and enjoy it! Some days you’ll hit it straight, and some days you’ll hit it… somewhere—but that’s all just the fun of the game.

Learn from others: watch videos, ask a caddie questions, and always stay curious. The best part about golf is that everything has a purpose — from how clubs are designed to the way the ball reacts. If something doesn’t go as planned, there’s almost always a reason. Learn from that reason!
